“What if we operated on the belief that it was critical that young people have opportunities to find, develop, publicly present, and intentionally apply their voices?” – Marc Bamuthi Joseph
Dec. 12th, 2009 the Premier Winter Charity Art Auction was held at the beautiful 2cc gallery in the East Village Arts District. On that warm rainy Saturday, artists to art enthusiasts came out in the heart of the giving season for a chance to take home some of the finest art in the region. It was the first ever event hosted by Long Beach Art Werks and Jaguar Press and 100% of the proceeds went to benefit the Long Beach Rescue Mission.
Over 50 different artists representing every community in the LB, LA, and OC area were featured in the show including Stephen Sotnick, Eydie McConnell, Madison Witte, Paul Demys, and Jessica Lah. All together they donated over 95 pieces (Art Catalog) of stunning and provocative 2-D art, 3-D art, and couture over the last two months. The work was shown from the 11th to the 13th with the silent auction falling on the evening of the 12th.
All told, the evening was an astounding success! Guests had the opportunity to enjoy the various works of art covering every wall of the gallery as well as refreshments in the telluric Sato Gardens while LB’s own DJ Troy spun the tunes. Buzzing with anticipation, over 200 people gathered inside the gallery to hear the winners of the auction before the whole thing turned into a dance party.
The results: 38 pieces of art were sold for a total donation of $1469 to help the rescue mission serve thousands of underprivileged locals this holiday season. LB Art Werks will continue to develop its tradition of expressing social justice through artistic production and positive energy!
